DuckDuckGo’s search engine and mobile browser are free to use. The company also offers optional subscription plans called Plus and Pro, which cost $9.99 and $19.99 per month, respectively, for enhanced privacy and AI tools.
Free vs. paid: what you get
The basic DuckDuckGo experience includes private search, tracker blocking, email protection aliases, and app tracking protection on Android—all at no cost. These features prevent websites and advertisers from following your activity across the web. The free browser does not collect or store your personal data, and search results are not influenced by your past behavior.
Paid subscriptions add advanced tools. The Plus and Pro plans are not required to use DuckDuckGo’s core privacy features. Instead, they offer additional services for users who want more comprehensive protection or access to powerful AI tools.
What’s in the Plus plan (.99/month)
The Plus plan includes a private, no-logs VPN powered by the WireGuard protocol. It works across up to five devices and encrypts your internet connection to hide your IP address and location. This is useful when using public Wi-Fi or accessing region-restricted content.
Subscribers also get automated personal information removal. This tool scans data broker sites and requests the removal of your personal details, such as phone numbers and addresses, from over 50 public data sources. The plan also includes identity theft restoration support and ad-free, private access to Duck.ai, DuckDuckGo’s AI chat interface.
What’s in the Pro plan (.99/month)
The Pro plan includes everything in Plus, but is aimed at users who rely heavily on AI tools. It offers access to advanced large language models like Claude Opus, with higher reasoning capabilities and double the usage limits on Duck.ai. These models are accessed through an anonymous proxy, meaning your prompts are not logged or used to train AI systems.
This tier is designed for professionals such as writers, researchers, or developers who need powerful AI without sacrificing privacy. It ensures that sensitive queries or proprietary ideas are not exposed to third-party AI providers.
How DuckDuckGo makes money
The free service is funded through contextual advertising. When you search for a term like "hiking boots," you may see ads related to that topic. These ads are based only on the current search, not your history or profile. DuckDuckGo does not track your behavior across sites to personalize ads.
The company also earns affiliate revenue from e-commerce links. If you click on a product from Amazon or eBay through DuckDuckGo and make a purchase, the company receives a small commission. This model supports the free service without compromising user privacy.
Is a paid plan worth it?
For most casual users, the free version offers strong privacy protection. The paid plans make sense if you want a built-in VPN, automated data removal, or private access to high-end AI models. Buying these tools separately—like a standalone VPN, data removal service, and AI subscription, could cost $40 or more per month. DuckDuckGo’s bundled pricing offers significant savings.
However, power users may prefer specialized tools with more configuration options. The DuckDuckGo VPN, for example, has fewer server locations than some dedicated providers. The value depends on whether you prioritize convenience and integration over granular control.
